Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures Meets the Need For Large Sizes In Corrosive Environments

Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures offers large instrument-sized fiberglass enclosures suited for a variety of both indoor and outdoor applications facing exposure to harsh, aggressive environments.

Stahlin also includes the most unique compounding formula available in every enclosure. SolarGuard®—a patented, non-halogenated fiberglass system outperforms all other available SMC formulations by as much as 60 percent in its ability to protect against UV damage while retaining gloss and color. SolarGuard® meets a NFPA No.101 Class A flame spread index. Fire retardancy meets UL 94 5V standards.

Here, are case studies demonstrating Stahlin’s unique ability to meet the needs of customers needing large enclosures:

Commerce Controls:

The engineering team needed customized panels that are non-corrosive but still cost effective. The challenge for enclosure manufacturers was the team's need for more than 40 enclosure cutouts for pilot lights, selector switches, pushbuttons, and displays.

“These large enclosures are extremely well made. Stahlin made a lot of effort to provide us with what we needed. They made many trips to our facility to discuss our needs before construction. Our custom panels arrived within a few weeks of our order. We had minor issues with one of the panels, but Stahlin came out and corrected it right away.” -- Mark Kosciolek, Project Engineer, Commerce Controls, Inc.

Morrow-Meadows: Carlsbad Desalination Project

Brian Murdick, a project manager at Morrow-Meadows Corporation, faced a challenge in which he needed an enclosure to protect electrical equipment at the Carlsbad Desalination Project on the coast of California.

Due to the nature of the process, the RO environment is extremely corrosive. In addition to the process itself, the exposure to salt air due to the proximity of the RO plant to the Pacific Ocean, heightened the risk of corrosion on the enclosure needed for this project.

Brian Murdick sums up his decision to use Stahlin products: “These Stahlin boxes were chosen instead because they are lighter in weight, easier to handle and install, and will hold up better than  stainless steel in this environment.”

Facing a challenge in a particularly corrosive environment, Brian’s experience with the product shows that the Stahlin enclosure provides ample resistance against corrosion: “I have been using Stahlin boxes for 8 years and have been pleased with the performance of the enclosures and that is why Stahlin was chosen for this Carlsbad Desalination Project.”

Stahlin’s N Series Type 4X Configurations are large control enclosures used in a variety of applications involving diverse environmental conditions. The Type 4X product is designed to meet the rigorous demands of indoor and outdoor applications. Control series enclosures are a natural choice for process control where moisture or chemical environments require unique protection, as they provide watertight, corrosion resistant protection against a range of chemicals, windblown dust, rain, sleet, and external ice formation.

N Series Design Features:
  • Rigid body construction
  • Watertight seal
  • Memory retaining polyurethane gasketing
  • Integral mounting feet for ease of installation
  • Panel-mounting inserts molded into frame
  • Special panel configurations available, including dead front panels
  • Built-in padlock hasp
  • Sizes ranging from 16” X 10” to 48” X 36”
Stahlin’s N Series enclosures meet NEMA 250 Type 1, 3, 3R, 4X, and 12 standards. They can withstand temperatures ranging from -76°F to 274°F, providing a UL94-5V flammability rating and the assurance of a NFPA No. 101: Flame Spread Class A (1).
Abita Brewery Control Tower:

Stahlin's Control Tower Enclosure (see picture, above), one of the largest built by the company, is used in the Abita plant. Designed for use in larger industrial control systems and machine tool control panels, the Control Tower Series' industrial look and ruggedness offers the most practical solution to many applications. They are suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments.

Control Tower N Series, Type 4X, line of enclosures are for dimensionally large applications (48 x 36 to 90 x 72). The larger size wall mount and freestanding enclosures are suitable for electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical control circuits with maximum available space.
