Micro Grow Greenhouse Systems, Inc., has been providing environmental computer controls for professional commercial growers and research greenhouses worldwide for more than 40 years. The Micro Grow team is focused on building systems that last. At times, this can be difficult task, because the greenhouse environment is notorious for corrosion. Corrosion in the greenhouse is most often caused by water, increased high humidity, and the use of reverse osmosis systems.



The use of reverse osmosis systems in greenhouse fog systems has dramatically increased in the past 10 years because of its reputation for increasing overall plant production. Yet, at the same time, reverse osmosis systems have a downside. The water produced from the system eventually attacks everything made of metal in the greenhouse, such as stainless steel enclosures. Why? Because this water is attracted to the minerals in the metal. So, greenhouse managers must have a corrosion prevention plan in place. Non-metallic materials are often used to prevent corrosion in this environment. This is why Micro Grow uses non-metallic enclosures to protect the company’s controls.

When Mirco Grow first began building products 40 years ago, metal housings were used. However, the company found that metal housings needed to be replaced much sooner due to corrosion created in any greenhouse environment. Micro Grow‘s engineering team was eventually convinced by Glenn Adams, the local Rexel electrical distributor, to switch to non-metallic enclosures to help reduce the long-term cost of the system due. Campbell Scientific selects Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures for high-quality enclosures that perform well in extreme environments.

THE SITUATION:


Since 1974, Campbell Scientific has been a leading designer and manufacturer of dataloggers, data acquisition systems, and measurement and control products. These tools are used worldwide in a variety of applications related to weather, water, energy, structures, machines, and soils. Campbell Scientific specializes in rugged, low-power systems for long-term, stand-alone monitoring and control.
Campbell Scientific has always been committed to producing accurate and dependable instruments. Although enclosures are often specified as an afterthought, Campbell Scientific knows the importance of the enclosure to protect instruments—if the enclosure fails so will the entire system.


THE CHALLENGE:

Campbell Scientific uses non-metallic enclosures because they withstand a wide range of temperatures and other environmental factors unlike certain metals counterparts especially at high altitudes and corrosive coastal regions. Plus, metal enclosures tend to be heavier and more difficult to transport to remote locations to meet some of Campbell Scientific customers' needs.

Campbell Scientific's previous non-metallic enclosure supplier started to have quality issues in the field (UV fiberglass blooming too early) and was unwilling to accommodate some of the company’s special needs for enclosures without an increase in cost. In 2008, Campbell Scientific’s enclosure team started looking for a new supplier. They ended up making the decision to switch to Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures.

Electrical enclosures are often put into harm's way in commercial and industrial environments. The enclosure must continually protect the controls inside, especially in environments such as warehouse or outdoor work areas where accidental damage due to collision with heavy machinery, equipment, vehicles and vandalism are often a daily occurrence.
 
How do you specify an enclosure that stands up to impact?
 
Look for the internationally recognized IK10 rating.

 
IK ratings are defined as IKXX, where "XX" is a number from 00 to 10, indicating the degree of protection provided by electrical enclosures against external mechanical impact. The higher the number providing a greater degree of protection with an IK10 being the highest rating available.
 
The ability of an enclosure to resist impact energy levels is measured in joules (J).

Stahlin J, CF, and F Series Non-Metallic Enclosures Pass UL 2043 Fire Test for Air Handling Spaces

On March 17, 2016, Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures provided the UL lab at the Northbrook testing facility with samples of the J, CF, and F Series. All three series were subjected to the same flame test described in UL Standard 2043, Fourth Edition.

Each of the Stahlin Non-Metallic enclosures product specimens tested MET all three requirements, which are:

-The peak rate of heat release measured during each enclosure tested was 100 kilowatts, or less

-The peak smoke release rate measured during each test was 0.21 m² /s, or less

-The total smoke released (10 minute test duration) was 75 m², or less

The UL 2043 fire test simulates a rectangular volume of air space similar to an air handling space above an enclosed ceiling. The UL technician suspends the product approximately 24 inches above the live gas burner. The air intake occurs through a 12-inch tall opening located below the walls on all four sides. Exhaust heat and smoke rise into an air exhaust hood in which heat and smoke sensors reside. The flame conforms to a heat release rate of 60 kilowatts.
The test determines the rate of heat release and the rate of smoke release of the burning product samples as they relate to the requirements for fire-resistant and low-smoke producing characteristics in accordance with the provisions of the following codes: National Electric Code, NFPA 70; International Mechanical Code, NFPA 5000; and Standard for the Installation of Air Conditioning and Ventilating Systems, NFPA 90A.

To control these wash systems, NS has a UL certified panel shop in-house where 100% of our control panels are designed and fabricated. Before being introduced to Stahlin enclosures, our purchasing department was jumping from manufacturer to manufacturer in an attempt to beat the continual price hikes they were being hit with every time they tried to place a sizable order.

This constant changing of manufacturers caused frustration in our panel shop, and even more in engineering, where they were always trying to keep one step ahead of the ever-changing mounting configurations of the enclosures. An engineering directive was released stating there would be no more arbitrary changes of enclosures to try to reduce cost without first receiving engineering approval and revised drawings. NS Wash had lost any cost savings in the fire drill effort to rework equipment to accept these ever changing panels.

The Solution to the Challenge:



NS Wash put our suppliers on notice to find quality enclosures at a fair price. One came back with some Stahlin Non-Metallic enclosures samples, at a price point way under what we had been paying other manufacturers. After we made the decision to switch to Stahlin enclosures in 2014, we have stayed with them primarily not because of their lower prices but because of their unwavering customer support.
