Stahlin's non-metallic enclosures survive harsh corrosive environments found at US shipping ports

During the past decade, shipping ports have become extremely competitive, as there are great economic gains from the importing and exporting business in the US. This means that ports must run smoothly every day. Every electrical control at the ports must be running in order to handle the traffic efficiently or cargo and cruise ships will move the business to another port. Corrosion at posts is extremely likely due to salt water and air along the coast, wide temperature fluctuations throughout the day, and even the water at inland ports can be corrosive as well.

A Port Authority in the US was having severe corrosion issues with stainless steel enclosures and made a decision to move to fiberglass /composite options. Yet, the engineer discovered that not all fiberglass enclosures are equal. They tried several manufacturers of non-metallic enclosures and only one survived in this harsh port environment.

Initially, the engineer viewed Stahlin as a cost-efficient way to provide enclosure solutions for applications subject to corrosion, solar abuse exacerbated by water reflection, high heat and humidity conditions, and dents/damage from vehicles. The Stahlin DiamondShield enclosure is currently located dockside and has been in use for 19 months without blooming problems, corrosion, or deterioration of any kind. Since the first installation, the engineer has found additional applications at the port, plus, he has promoted Stahlin to other staff engineers needing enclosures.

The story doesn’t end here. Recently, the engineer ordered a Stahlin enclosure from a local distributor using the Stahlin part number with a statement that this was the only acceptable product. The distributor sent a competitor’s enclosure instead of a Stahlin stating that it would provide equal protection at a lower price.

The engineer returned the competitor's enclosure as he had proof that it wouldn’t perform as promised. The engineer is so confident in the performance of Stahlin's enclosures in this harsh environment that he will be placing an order 150-200 Stahlin enclosures for new security monitoring equipment with a non-substitution provision in the contract.

The Pioneering Panel Management System Of Stahlin Diamond Shield

     DiamondShield Enclosure Specific Accessories
  • Full utilization of both space and design. All space within the enclosure can be accessed and utilized with minimal requirements for additional mounting hardware.
  • Panel maneuverability at both the time of assembly and in actual field use.
  • Optimized use and function of all usable space within the enclosure while assisting in the mounting of cover mounted devices, such as touchpads and printed circuit boards.
  • Maximized visibility of panels offering critical feedback, such as instrumentation, while preserving the integrity of the enclosure
  • Ability to meet unique visual requirements usually associated with a dead front panel.
  • Ability to meet the needs for mounting surface at rear of enclosure.
  • Ability to meet end users’ design capabilities and field changes that would otherwise require major modification or costly disassembly.
  • Ability to externally assemble, then “drop in” to the enclosure DIN rail mounted components, thereby minimizing assembly, modification and field servicing.
  • Maximum surface area for pushbutton or touchpad layout. Maximizes end users’ design possibilities.
  • Ability to meet end users’ requirements for the installation of isolated visibility or custom visual requirements.
  • Offers restricted access to areas of adjustment and calibration.
Stahlin is the leader and pioneer of the fiberglass enclosure, providing state-of-the-art electrical enclosures made from non-metal materials for outdoor and indoor industrial use. All types of electrical junction boxes and enclosures are manufactured with the highest attention to detail. In addition, Stahlin offers one of the largest ranges of product sizes and enclosure options. With a commitment to quality and performance, Stahlin has engineered and manufactured innovative, reliable enclosures since the 1940’s.
